Rohit Sharma opens up on removing KL Rahul as vice-captain of India’s Test side

The third Test match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy between India and Australia will be played from March 1 (Wednesday) in Indore. Despite the team management’s trust in KL Rahul, the Indian opener has only scored 38 runs in the last three innings, making it difficult for him to continue getting chances in the playing XI, especially with someone like Shubman Gill waiting in the wings. Although Gill has showcased impressive form, selectors have opted for more experienced player at the top of India’s batting order.

When we talk about players going through a tough time, anyone with potential will be given enough time to prove himself. Being vice-captain or not being vice-captain does not tell you anything. Rahul was only appointed vice-captain because he was probably the senior most. And stripping Rahul of his vice-captaincy ‘indicates nothing’, Rohit Sharma explained in a pre-match conference.

The Indian captain admitted that as far as Gill and Rahul are concerned, they both train and practice for long hours before any game. But as far as our XI is concerned, we have not finalized it yet. I prefer it to be announced at the toss. Can’t count out last-minute injuries and we will keep it interesting for you guys as well, Rohit added.

He expressed that all 17 players in the team have a chance and the team management will back those who are talented. Team India leads the four-match series 2-0 and if they win the third Test, Rohit Sharma-led men will seal their place in the World Test Championship final.
