The inaugural match of the 14th season of the IPL was played between Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore in Chennai. RCB defeated Mumbai Indians by 2 wickets by scoring the winning run in the last ball. RCB has won the inaugural match for the first time in the history of IPL. At the same time, Mumbai Indians could not win their first match in the tournament for the 9th consecutive year. Mumbai Indians scored 159 for 9 wickets in the first inning and RCB won the match by 160 runs for 8 wickets. Mumbai Indians scored just 37 runs in the last 5 overs and lost 6 wickets. While RCB’s Harshal Patel took 5 wickets.
RCB needed 54 runs off the last 30 balls and De Villiers (48) narrowed the gap but then RCB lost Christian’s wicket. De Villiers, however, kept the match exciting with his six-hitting abilities. 7 runs were to be scored from the last over and unfortunately, Villiers got out due to a runout but that did not stop RCB from winning the match as Harshal Patel managed to score a winning run off the last ball of the match.
In the first inning Chris Lynn (49), Suryakumar (31) and Ishan Kishan (28) played some fiery knocks and took MI to a decent total. While Glenn Maxwell (39) in his first match for RCB had a good stint with the bat.
