The opener hit an unbeaten 101 to help the Black Caps recover from 39-2 to make 173-3 prior to rain ended the game before at Seddon Park. Latham shared a 3rd wicket stand of 114 with Ross Taylor, who made 53, later England won the toss.

New Zealand leads 1-0 in the 2 Test series. Game have started half an hour early at 21:30 GMT on Friday to make up for the lost time, with 35.3 overs lost to rain.

There was little support for the bowlers, even with the green pitch, and England will have to stay disciplined if they are to break through the Black Caps line-up. Joe Root has often twisted to Stokes when in need of a get through, but the all-rounder effort through only 2 overs with the ball.

Stokes grimaced and felt his left knee through his short spell in the afternoon, and wilted back to his fielding position just before tea. They say it never rains but it pours, and when the space opened on day one in Hamilton, forcing the players off 3 balls into the sunset time and never to return, it seemed to sum up much of England’s Test tour of New Zealand.

Tom Latham had obtain the fine century before the tea break and one of sumptuous whips through mid-wicket and taken the hosts to 173 for 3, despite being asked to 1st bat.
