Kapil Dev reacts to Ravichandran Ashwin breaking his record in Test cricket

Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin surpassed the legendary Kapil Dev in the list of all-time highest wicket-takers in Test cricket. Ashwin scalped his 435th Test wicket by dismissing Charith Asalanka in the first Test against Sri Lanka. With 435 wickets, the veteran spinner went past Kapil Dev’s 434 scalps. Ashwin became the second leading wicket-taker for India in Test cricket after Anil Kumble who leads the list with 619 scalps. All-rounder Ashwin is now the ninth leading wicket-taker in the history of Test cricket.

Former all-rounder praised Ashwin for his wonderful achievement. Kapil Dev admitted that Ashwin would have broken his record a lot earlier if he had been given more chances to play. Former Indian cricketer held the record for the most Test wickets by an Indian cricketer for 10 years before it was broken by Anil Kumble in 2004. Now 18 years later, Ashwin had done it to find himself next only to Kumble.

Kapil Dev expressed that it is a great accomplishment, especially from a spinner who did not get enough opportunities in the recent past. The former Indian captain feels happy for Ashwin. Kapil Dev added that his time has passed and it is time for other players to perform well and create history.

Kapil Dev admitted that Ashwin is a tremendous cricketer, a clever spinner with excellent bowling skills. Kapil wants the off-spinner to target 500 Test scalps. Former medium-pacer concluded that Ashwin would try hard to achieve that feat. The record-breaker is capable of getting many more wickets than that.
