IPL 2022: Andre Russell powered Kolkata Knight Riders to beat Punjab Kings

Kolkata Knight Riders returned to their winning ways after beating Punjab Kings by 6 wickets. Andre Russell’s firing knock of unbeaten 70-runs helped KKR to clinch a comfortable victory. KKR revived from a middle-order collapse and finished the 138-runs chase in just 14.3 overs. Earlier, KKR’s pacer Umesh Yadav scalped four wickets to register his best bowling figures in IPL.

After winning the toss, KKR skipper Shreyas Iyer decided to bowl first and it give him a good result. Yadav stunned Punjab Kings by dismissing their captain Mayank Agarwal in the very first over. Though Punjab lost an early wicket, Bhanuka Rajapaksa went very hard and batted aggressively. Rajapaksa (31) hit a boundary and three consecutive sixes before Shivam Mavi bagged him.

Punjab Kings’ batters failed to show resistance and kept losing wickets at regular intervals. KKR were excellent on the field as Tim Southee and Nitish Rana took some brilliant catches. Kagiso Rabada played a cameo of 25-runs and helped his side to post a defendable score of 137-runs.

In response, KKR failed to make a good start as Rabada and Odean Smith removed Ajinkya Rahane (12) and Venkatesh Iyer (3) inside the power-play overs. Shreyas and Sam billings looked to steady the KKR innings, but Rahul Chahar had other ideas. The right-arm leg spinner threatened to take the game away as he dismissed Shreyas and Rana in consecutive deliveries.

Punjab Kings failed to carry on the momentum as Russell batted with sheer power. The Jamaican cricketer counter-attacked by hitting two fours and eight massive sixes. Finally, KKR secured a remarkable win.
