IPL 2020 to be hosted at UAE as BCCI waits for government’s nod.

In a recent interview Brijesh Patel the chairman of IPL’s governing council said that they have decided to move the IPL 2020 edition to United Arab Emirates (UAE). Meanwhile, BCCI is waiting for the approval from the Indian government for shifting the tournament. This decision comes after the ICC made the move to postpone the Men’s T20 World Cup to next year. As the ICC mega event is now postponed it gives a free window for BCCI to host its crown jewel event IPL.

As of now the dates for the event are not decided yet, but as per preliminary talks the IPL can be hosted from the months of September and November. Comprising of 60 matches the tournament is to be held at Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah venues. Patel when talking to media he said they were waiting for ICC to make its official decision on the T20 World Cup since now there is a window BCCI has gone forward with hosting the IPL by applying for permission from the government.

When asked about whether the tournament would be held behind doors, Patel said it depends upon the UAE government. IPL 2020 was scheduled to begin in April this year but was postponed indefinitely due to the COVID-19 pandemic. BCCI had intended to host the event in India but unfortunately, with an increase in registered cases, BCCI had to shift the event to the UAE.
