India star opener Shubman Gill named ICC Men’s Player for the month of January 2023

India star batter Shubman Gill on Monday was named the ICC Men’s Player of the month for January 2023, following a series of impressive knocks in the ODI format. Gill overcame a tough fight to claim his first ICC Men’s Player of the Month award, surpassing New Zealand opener Devon Conway and Indian pacer Mohammed Siraj in the voting. The 23-year-old young opener became the first Indian to win the award since Virat Kohli in October 2022.

England U-19 skipper Grace Scrivens became the youngest player to be named for the Women’s honor. Scrivens won the award after her all-round brilliance in the inaugural ICC U-19 Women’s T20 World Cup. Gill enjoyed a record-breaking month in white-ball cricket in January. Gill recently scored a magnificent double-hundred against the Black Caps.

The right-handed batter also became the youngest Indian cricketer to hit a century in all three formats of international cricket. The free-scoring batter stood tall as the top candidate, scoring 567 runs in January, including three century-plus scores. India’s sensational opener impressed every cricket fan around the world with a lethal combination of graceful and attacking stroke-play.

January was a special month for me, and winning this award makes it all more memorable. It is always heartening to be recognized for your performances, and I will take great confidence from these innings, especially as we head into an extremely important period prior to an ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup on home soil, Gill confessed in an ICC press release. Gill thanked his teammates and coaches for their support.
