India defeated Sri Lanka by 238 runs in the day-night Test at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. India delivered a clinical performance to hammer Sri Lanka and clinch the series 2-0. The Lankan skipper Dimuth Karunaratne fought a lone battle by hitting a fine knock of 107-run. However, his brilliant knock went in vain as the Indian bowlers bowled out Sri Lanka for 208.
Rohit Sharma’s men bagged all nine wickets within a session and a half to prove their dominance on home soil. Ravichandran Ashwin gave the breakthrough by dismissing Kusal Mendis for 54-run. In the very next over, Ravindra Jadeja stunned the Lankans by cleaning up Angelo Mathews for just 1.
Ashwin struck again to remove Dhananjaya de Silva for 4. After tea break, Axar Patel struck twice to dismiss Niroshan Dickwella and Charith Asalanka. Though wickets kept on falling, Karunaratne played a fighting innings on the other end. The Lankan captain impressed everyone with his foot works and used his feet with confidence to counter-attack the Indian spinners.
Karunaratne brought up his 14th Test century and became only the third Sri Lanka skipper, after Kumara Sangakarra and Dinesh Chandimal, to register a Test hundred in India. However, Jasprit Bumrah bowled out Karunaratne with an excellent delivery.
Bumrah and Ashwin took the remaining three wickets to secure the win. The off-spinner was the pick of the bowlers with four wickets and also surpassed Dale Steyn in the highest wicket-takers’ list. Shreyas Iyer received the player of the match award for his excellent knocks of 92 and 67 runs.
