IND vs NZ 2nd Test, Day 3: Ravi Ashwin bags three, India five wickets away from a big win

Chasing an improbable target of 540 runs to win, New Zealand ended Day 3 at 140/5 at the Wankhede Stadium. Daryl Mitchell, who knocked a fighting 60 runs, was the stand-out batter for the Kiwis. Kiwi opener Will Young showed some resistance before getting out for 20. Middle-order batter Henry Nicholls looked confident and remained unbeaten on 36. Indian ace spinner Ravichandran Ashwin put huge pressure on the Kiwis by picking up three important wickets of their top-order.

Earlier, team India declared their second innings at 276/7. Indian batters displayed superb batting to post a gigantic target. Mayank Agarwal played excellent shots and finished as the top-scorer with his 62. Cheteshwar Pujara and Shubman Gill scored 47 each to boost the score. While Indian skipper Virat Kohli scored 36, Axar Patel played a cameo and blasted an unbeaten 41.

The Kiwi seamers went wicket-less. While the Kiwi spinner Ajaz Patel scalped four wickets, Rachin Ravindra bagged three. Ajaz now holds the record for best bowling figures against India in Test cricket. He took a total of 14 wickets (4/106 & 10/119) in Mumbai. 

Chasing a huge target, Kiwi skipper Tom Latham was the first man to depart early on 6. Ashwin trapped Latham leg before to send him back to the dressing room. A few moments later, Ashwin dismissed Young and Ross Taylor (6) in his back-to-back overs. Mitchell, who played solid, lost his wicket by going for a wild shot off Axar. 

Ravi Ashwin added another stone to his crown by becoming the only Indian bowler to pick 50 Test wickets in a calendar year four times (2015, 2016, 2017, and 2021). Indian legendary spinners Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh had picked 50 wickets 3 times in a calendar year.
