England beat Ireland in the inaugural ODI Super League match

The ODI series between England and Ireland marked the beginning of the first ODI match after a hiatus from the coronavirus lockdown. England defeated Ireland by 6 wickets in the first ODI in Southampton. This was England’s first ODI match since they became world champions last year. England’s Sam Billings (67*) and David Willey (5-30) put on a great performance by giving their career-best ODI figures representing their nation.

This ODI series is a part of the inaugural ODI Super League that was announced recently by ICC. This league will serve as the qualification round for the 2023 World Cup tournament. Thus, it is more important for Ireland to secure every possible point during this league which would eventually decide their fate for ICC’s 2023 crown jewel event.

After deciding to bowl David Willey gave the perfect start that England craved. He took his first five-wicket haul as Saqib, Tom Curran and Adil Rashid contributed their part with the ball. Willey was bestowed with the man of the match award for his career-best performance. After some quick dismissals, Ireland came back strong to post 172 runs on board. Debutant Curtis Campher top-scored for the Irish team with an unbeaten 59.

As England returned to chase the target, they got into a slump by losing some wickets early in their innings. But skipper Eoin Morgan and Billings steadied the ship by putting a 94-run partnership between them to see England through.
