England decided to bat after winning the toss. Jasprit Bumrah stunned England with a wicket in the very first over of the match. He trapped Rory Burns in front of the wickets. England top-order failed to score quick runs without losing their wickets. Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow had a partnership of 72 runs, which looked like a threat for India. Later India had a successful review to get the wicket of Bairstow. Bairstow made a contribution of 29 runs with his bat.
All-rounder Sam Curran scored a quick 27 off 37 balls to add some crucial runs down the order. Indian openers KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma stood steady against the English pacers and remained unbeaten on 9 runs each. India finished 21/0 at stumps on day 1.
