In a low-scoring T20 World Cup thriller played in New York on Sunday, India defeated arch-rivals Pakistan by six runs, with star pacer Jasprit Bumrah’s heroics. Earlier, Pakistan bowled India out for 119 in 19 overs, but even though Mohammad Rizwan scored 31 for his team, Bumrah took important wickets in a well-paced innings, and his figures of 3/14 in 4 overs proved to be the difference as Pakistan finished 113/7.
Pakistan required 40 runs to win off the final six overs, but they could not deliver in the face of Bumrah’s brilliance. After taking out Pakistan’s captain Babar Azam (13) early on, Bumrah produced a crucial breakthrough by dismissing Rizwan (31) in the 15th over, with Pakistan down to 80/4. With Pakistan needing 21 runs to win, Bumrah was then given the ball for the penultimate over. He gave up just three runs and got rid of Iftikhar Ahmed with his final delivery.
After that, Pakistan needed to score 18 runs in the last over, a challenging task on a tough batting surface, and things got even trickier when Arshdeep Singh trapped Imad Wasim LBW with the first ball. India secured their second victory of the tournament despite Naseem Shah’s valiant efforts, as he struck the fourth and fifth balls of the over for boundaries.
Earlier, Naseem and Haris Rauf, gave their side a fighting chance, taking three wickets apiece to help India get dismissed for a low score. After a rain-delayed start, team India lost openers Rohit Sharma (13) and Virat Kohli (4) cheaply, but Rishabh Pant’s 42 from 31 balls gave them something to work with. Axar Patel chipped in with 20 while other batters failed to score good runs. India scored only 24 runs for the last five wickets.
