Gujarat Titans’ (GT) bowlers produced a remarkable comeback to beat Mumbai Indians (MI) by 6 runs in a final-over thriller on Sunday night. Chasing 169, MI’s former skipper Rohit Sharma and impact player Dewald Brevis played brilliant knocks of 43 and 46 respectively to keep their side in the hunt. Needing 19 runs in the final over, MI skipper Hardik Pandya smashed a six and a four off the first two deliveries but Umesh Yadav bowled a well-directed bouncer to get rid of Pandya (11) and successfully defended 19 runs to hand GT a memorable win.
Batting first, Wriddhiman Saha and Shubman Gill gave GT a decent start, adding 31 runs in 4 overs. MI’s premier pacer Jasprit Bumrah bowled an excellent yorker to clean up Saha for 19. Gill and Sai Sudharsan stitched a 33-run partnership to steady GT’s innings. However, in the 8th over, Rohit took a fine catch near the boundary rope to dismiss GT skipper Gill for 31.
Azmatullah Omarzai (17) and David Miller (12) departed cheaply while Sudharsan played a fine knock of 39-ball 45 to keep the scoreboard moving. Rahul Tewatia’s cameo of 15-ball 22 helped GT to reach a competitive total of 168/6 in 20 overs. Bumrah starred with a three-wicket haul for MI while Gerald Coetzee picked up two wickets.

Naman Dhir looked to up the ante, smashing Omarzai for three fours and a six, however, the right-arm pacer managed to remove Dhir (20) in the same over. Rohit and Brewis put on an excellent partnership of 77 runs to take the game away from GT. After a long search, Sai Kishore gave the much-needed breakthrough, trapping Rohit in front of the stumps. From thereon, GT bowlers exhibited a brilliant effort to take wickets regularly and won the match in front of their home crowd.
