Delhi Capitals (DC) players produced an impressive performance to outclass Mumbai Indians (MI) in the first match of the Delhi leg of Women’s Premier League 2024. Chasing a massive 193, MI batters failed to withstand DC’s power-packed bowling attack. DC’s left-arm spinner Jess Jonassen claimed three, while Marizanne Kapp picked two wickets as MI was restricted to 163/8 in 20 overs. Earlier, Jemimah Rodrigues and Meg Lanning scored fine half-centuries, helping DC to reach a big 192/4 in 20 overs.

Earlier, MI won the toss and elected to bowl first. Lanning and Shafali Verma gave DC a superb start, adding 48 runs in 4 overs. Shafali’s fine cameo of 12-ball 28 came to an end when Yastika Bhatia took a fine catch. Alice Capsey’s stay in the crease was not long as Hayley Matthews cleaned her up for 19.

But DC captain Lanning showed calm and composure during her knock of 53. Jemimah, on the other side, smashed the Mumbai bowlers all around the park in the slog overs to give Delhi’s innings a much-needed push. Jemimah remained unbeaten on 69, and her aggressive knock included 8 fours and 3 sixes.

MI’s chase got off to a very bad start as the defending champions lost three early wickets. Kapp bowled out Bhatia (6) in the very first over, while Shikha Pandey rattled the stumps to dismiss Nat Sciver-Brunt (5) in the next over. Kapp then removed the in-form Harmanpreet to give MI a huge blow. Matthews and Amelia Kerr added 25 runs, looking to steady the MI innings. But Jonassen got the better of Matthews who top-scored 29. Amanjot Kaur and Sajeevan Sajana fought till the end with brilliant cameos of 42 and 24, however, those were not enough to take MI home.
