With the announcement of India’s squad for the three-match T20I series against Afghanistan, the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee has confirmed Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s participation in the T20 World Cup 2024. Even though the two veteran batters have taken a break of nearly 14 months in the shortest format of games, former India captain Sourav Ganguly believes that Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will lead the Men In Blue’s batting charge at the ICC event.
In June, the USA and the West Indies will co-host the 2024 ICC World T20. Kohli and Rohit have not played a T20I since the World Cup quarterfinal against England in 2022. The batting partnership was scheduled to return following the ODI World Cup in November. However, the seasoned campaigners extended their T20I hiatus, and there were no clear signs about Rohit and Kohli’s future.
Earlier in an interview, Ganguly backed both Rohit and Kohli for the future in India’s T20I World Cup squad. The former India cricketer said that Rohit will lead the team, as speculation grew about whether Hardik Pandya should take over the job if the 37-year-old misses the competition.
Of course, Rohit should captain the team in the T20I World Cup. Virat Kohli also should be there. Virat Kohli is an outstanding player, nothing will happen even if they come back to the T20 fold after a long gap, Ganguly said. Ganguly also spoke highly about Yashasvi Jaiswal’s performance in the recently concluded test series in South Africa. The Young opener has played well in the second test, it’s just the start of his career. He will get enough opportunities, Ganguly concluded.
