One masterclass batter who has been missing from the Indian cricket team at the ODI Cricket World Cup 2023 is Shubman Gill. The young Indian opener was expected to be team India’s top-order batting staple at the ICC tournament. However, illness made him miss India’s first two ODI Cricket World Cup matches against Australia and Afghanistan. The Indian cricket team, led by Rohit Sharma, will play arch-rivals Pakistan at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on October 14 (Saturday). And this venue is Gill’s favourite and the right-handed batter has a fantastic track record here.
Ahead of the battle against Pakistan, Gill has begun batting. Several photos of him batting in the nets went viral on Thursday. Gill was the only Indian cricketer to practice in the nets, while the rest of the team rested after their victory over Afghanistan on Wednesday. Gill practiced throwdowns at the Narendra Modi Stadium nets for approximately an hour. And this is a positive sign for Team India because Gill’s recuperation has been much faster than predicted.
Indian cricket team batting coach Rathour said in the pre-match press conference that Gill is recovering well. He was hospitalized, yes, but that was more as a precaution. He is back in the hotel and he is recovering well. So, being monitored by the medical team and whatever update we get, we hope he will recover pretty soon. He is looking good actually, Rathour added. Meanwhile, India has had an excellent start to this World Cup. They defeated Australia by 7 wickets in Chennai, and then dominated Afghanistan.
