Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja helped India rebuild the innings after they lost four quick wickets in the second session. India dominated the first and final session of Day 1, finishing 288/4 at stumps. Indian star batter Kohli, who is inching for another Test ton, remained unbeaten on 87 while all-rounder Jadeja played a crucial knock of unbeaten 36. The wicket at Queen’s Park Oval looked good for batting and India will be hoping to post a massive first-inning total.

After being put into bat first, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma dominated the West Indies bowling attack throughout the first session. Both batters gave India a solid start by adding 139 runs for the opening wicket. Young Jaiswal fell after scoring 57 to Jason Holder, the only bowler who looked dangerous.

Very soon, Kemar Roach dismissed Shubman Gill (10), who failed to make a mark once again. Jomel Warrican then cleaned up Indian skipper Rohit (80) who looked in good touch to hit a century. Rohit achieved yet another record in his cricketing career and has gone past MS Dhoni to become India’s fifth-highest run-scorer in international cricket with 17,281 runs.

Vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane did not last long as Shannon Gabriel bowled him out for just 8. The hosts made a strong comeback by scalping four wickets in the second session. However, Virat and Jadeja put India back on top with a fine 106-run partnership. Kohli surpassed South Africa’s Jacques Kallis to become the fifth-highest run-scorer in international cricket history. Kohli has scored 25,548 runs at an average of 53.67.
