Team India is in the driving seat after Ravichandran Ashwin demolished the West Indies with his 33rd five-wicket haul on Day 1 of the first Test Match. India finished Day 1 on a stronger note as skipper Rohit Sharma (30*) and debutant Yashasvi Jaiswal (40*) guided their side to 80/0 in 23 overs at Windsor Park. India trails the West Indies only by 70 runs. All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja gave good support to Ashwin with a three-wicket haul.

After deciding to bat first, West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite and opener Tagenarine Chanderpaul started to play their innings slow and steady. In the 13th over, Ashwin produced the breakthrough by cleaning up Chanderpaul (12), also becoming the first Indian bowler to dismiss both father and son in Test cricket. Ashwin then got the better of Brathwaite (20).

While seamer Shardul Thakur dismissed Raymon Reifer (2) for cheap, Mohammed Siraj took a one-handed stunner to hand Jadeja his first wicket before the lunch break. Alick Athanaze (47) showed some resistance and continued to score runs with a steady head. But wickets kept falling at the other end. Much expected Jason Holder did not last long and departed after scoring just 18.

Rahkeem Cornwall chipped in with an unbeaten 19 runs. Ashwin and Jadeja ran through the West Indies lower order and finished off the proceedings soon. India will look to extend the stronghold even further when they take on the field on Day 2. On the other side, the Windies will need to execute their plans well to make a comeback.
