Team India is set to begin its next assignment against the West Indies, which is a full-fledged series that gets underway on July 12. After completing the Test, ODI, and T20I series in the Caribbean Island, the Rohit Sharma-led side will compete in the Asia Cup 2023 which kicks off on August 31. However, Men in Blue’s main focus will be the ODI World Cup, which is scheduled to be held in India in October-November.
These series will give enough time to Head Coach Rahul Dravid and the team management to assess the players before taking a final call on the squad for the World Cup. In connection with that, former India captain Sourav Ganguly shared a few interesting points, where he highlighted the importance of wrist-spinners since the World Cup is entirely played in India.
Ganguly listed out a few options like Kuldeep Yadav and Ravi Bishnoi but he has urged the BCCI to keep a close eye on Yuzvendra Chahal, who could be key to their chances. Ganguly feels that the 32-year-old leg-spinner should not be overlooked as he did not get a spot in the playing XI for the entire T20 World Cup 2022. Chahal performs extremely consistently in shorter formats, whether it is 20-over or 50-over, Ganguly said.
When you play against stronger opponents such as Australia, England, or South Africa, a wrist-spinner makes a big difference in Indian conditions. In 2011 there was Piyush Chawla, who bowled well, Ganguly added. When we went to South Africa in 2007, there also our wrist-spinners bowled well along with the fast bowlers, he concluded.
