Punjab Kings held their nerve to beat Mumbai Indians by 12-runs at the MCA Stadium. Punjab Kings battled well in the close encounter and outclassed Mumbai Indians to secure their third win of the season. Meanwhile, MI faced its fifth-successive loss and remains the only winless team in the season. MI also became the first team in IPL history to lose the first five matches of a season twice (2014 & 2022).
After being invited to bat first, PBKS rode well on brilliant knocks from Shikhar Dhawan (70) and their skipper Mayank Agarwal. Both added 97-runs to give a solid platform for their side. However, Murugan Ashwin gave the initial breakthrough by dismissing Agarwal on 52-runs.
Jaydev Unadkat and Jasprit Bumrah picked up one wicket each to bring MI back into the game. But Jitesh Sharma played a brilliant cameo of 30-runs and helped PBKS to slam 198/5 in 20 overs. Shahrukh Khan chipped in with 15-runs towards the end.
In the run-chase, MI skipper Rohit Sharma (28) produced some fireworks at the start before Kagiso Rabada dismissed him. In the very next over, Vaibhav Arora sent Ishan Kishan (3) back to the pavilion. But youngster Dewald Brevis counter-attacked and smashed 49-runs to turn the game towards the MI side.
Tilak Varma (35) and Suryakumar Yadav (43) brought MI close to the total. But PBKS players were brilliant on the field and made two crucial run-outs to dismiss Tilak and Pollard, which eventually proved key to MI’s downfall. Odean Smith was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 4/30.
